Merkel urges action on debt crisis
German leader proposes changes to EU treaties
Chancellor Angela Merkel called yesterday for swift action to amend European treaties to address the underlying causes of the sovereign-debt crisis that has shaken Europe and jeopardized the future of the common currency. Merkel, a central player in efforts to rescue Europe’s single currency, was addressing the German Parliament in anticipation of a meeting next week in Brussels, when Europe’s leaders will once again try to find a politically palatable solution to the ongoing crisis.
