A senior figure in Germany’s junior coalition partner resigned abruptly yesterday, presenting Chancellor Angela Merkel with a potential political distraction as she leads European efforts to combat the euro crisis, warning that there will be “no simple and fast solutions’’ to rescue the beleaguered common currency. Merkel offered her somber assessment of the currency’s plight in a speech to the Bundestag lower house of Parliament yesterday shortly after the surprise announcement from Christian Lindner, 32, the secretary of the divided, pro-business Free Democrats that he was quitting.
