UK and Jordan hold talks on extremist cleric
LONDON—Britain's security minister is holding talks in Jordan seeking to overcome a European ban on deporting a radical Islamist cleric from the U.K. to the kingdom.
The government said James Brokenshire is holding meetings Tuesday with Jordanian officials seeking new assurances in the case of Abu Qatada, a cleric who British officials say is an al-Qaida figurehead and a threat to national security.
He was freed from an English prison into virtual house arrest late Monday after the European Court of Human Rights ruled last month he could not be sent to Jordan to face terrorism charges.
The court argues there is a risk evidence obtained through torture would be used against him.
Jordan has said it will offer a guarantee that the suspect will receive a fair trial.
