BRUSSELS—Hungary says it has replied to the European Union in a dispute over whether the government is breaching EU laws regarding the independence of the central bank and judiciary.

The regional bloc has launched legal proceedings against Hungary over these and related issues, and critics fear Prime Minister Viktor Orban is taking Hungary down an authoritarianism path.

A government statement Friday said officials had addressed questions regarding the independence of the Hungarian National Bank, the National Data Protection Authority, and the mandatory retirement age for judges.

It said its letter also explained a law on the media which the EU has criticized.

EU spokesman Amadeo Altafaj Tardio confirmed that Hungary's letter was received Friday.
