GENEVA—Sotheby's says it expects a rose-colored diamond worn by French, English, Dutch and German royals to fetch up to $4 million at auction May 15.

The company says the 34.98-carat 'Beau Sancy' diamond is one of the most important historic diamonds ever to come under the hammer.

Sotheby's head of jewelry for Europe, David Bennett, said Wednesday that the stone was likely cut in the second half of the 16th century and worn in the crown of Marie de Medici at her coronation as Queen Consort of Henry IV of France in 1610.

Ownership of the gem has since passed through several European noble houses and it is now being sold by heirs of the Prussian royal family.
