LONDON—British prosecutors say they are investigating whether a policeman racially abused a man arrested during last year's riots and will decide whether to file charges.

Officials say prosecutors initially decided not to charge the officer, who is accused of making racist remarks to a black man arrested Aug. 11.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Grace Ononiwu said the unidentified man's attorneys had protested the decision and that she had directed a senior lawyer to reconsider the evidence.

The Guardian newspaper on Friday published what it said was a recording of the policeman's conversation with the suspect in which the officer apparently utters a racial slur.

England's August riots were the worst in years and some argue that racial tension helped fuel the disorder.
