SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—Puerto Rico's Corrections Department says it plans to dismiss 97 officers and suspend more than 100 others who face charges of drug consumption, contraband smuggling and unjustified absences.
Spokeswoman Sheila Padin said Friday that the dismissals come as authorities continue to investigate other similar cases within the department of more than 5,000 officers.
She said newly appointed Corrections Secretary Jesus Gonzalez Cruz sent letters this week to the officers notifying them of the disciplinary sanctions they face.
The dismissals are not expected to affect the department. Padin said 325 officers graduated from the academy in June and an additional 260 are expected to graduate by year's end.
