GUATEMALA CITY—Officials say a drug trafficker wanted for extradition to the United States has been captured outside Guatemala City by U.S. and Guatemalan authorities.

Government spokesman Carlos Melocal says Elio Lorenzana Cordon was flown to the capital to appear before a judge after his Tuesday arrest in a village about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of the capital.

Lorenzana is the fifth major trafficker caught over the last two years in Guatemala, which is trying to beat gangs and Mexican drug cartels that have taken control of swathes of the country.

Lorenzana, two brothers and his father Waldemar, were accused of cocaine trafficking and placed on a U.S. list of alleged drug kingpins. Waldemar Lorenzana, 71, was arrested in April on a U.S. extradition warrant.
