MEXICO CITY—Mexican officials say they've arrested the son of the slain leader of the country's Gulf drug cartel.

Defense officials say in a statement that they detained 23-year-old Ezequiel "El Junior" Cardenas Rivera on Friday. Rivera's father was Antonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, Gulf leader until he was killed by federal forces in November 2010.

The statement says Cardenas Rivera was caught as he left a party in the northern city of Matamoros, along with the accused chief of Matamoros' smuggling routes, and other alleged accomplices. It did not say what role he was suspected to have played in the cartel.
