SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—Hector Ferrer, a major Puerto Rican political figure and a candidate for mayor of the island's capital, was arrested Thursday for alleged domestic violence.

A judge is expected to issue a restraining order against him, Ferrer's attorney, Osvaldo Carlo, told reporters.

Ferrer was released in the afternoon and told reporters he would issue a statement later, declining further comment.

Police said there was evidence that Ferrer damaged the home and made crude statements to his wife in the presence of his children. They provided no other details.

Osvaldo said his client is separating from his wife and got into an argument but that there was no physical violence.

Ferrer is the vice president and spokesman of the Popular Democratic Party, one of the two parties that dominates the island's government. He is running against longtime San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini.

Ferrer has served as a member of the island's House of Representatives since 2000.
