KHARTOUM, Sudan—The U.N. and the African Union say gunmen have opened fire on peacekeeping forces in South Darfur state, killing one and injuring two.

A statement from the forces said the attack Monday took place near Nyala, the state's capital. The casualties were from the Sierra Leone contingent of UNAMID, the joint African Union-United Nations force.

According to the U.N., nearly 2 million people have been displaced by the war in Darfur.

Monday's death bring the number of peacekeepers killed to 34 since their deployment in Darfur in 2007.
