MANAMA, Bahrain—Bahrain says it has arrested a suspect allegedly linked to a major bomb-making operation uncovered last month in the violence-wracked Gulf nation.

A government statement Thursday says the suspect has been charged with waging attacks and working on bomb production in the strategic kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Bahrain's Sunni monarchy has faced more than 17 months of street protests and clashes with the kingdom's majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice.

More than 50 people have died in the unrest, and Bahraini authorities claim some opposition groups seek to escalate the violence with increasing bombings.

Authorities say a raid last month found tons of bomb-making material.
