Philippon was killed May 8, 2005, by enemy small-arms fire in Qaim. His parents were told of his death on Mother's Day, their 24th anniversary. Philippon had served in the Marine color guard and had carried the flag at President Reagan's funeral, but kept asking to be assigned to the front lines. He was a high-school hockey player and was engaged to be married.
