Hoyt was killed Dec. 11, 2004, when a makeshift bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. The Guardsman was remembered back home as a typical kid who played drums in a band and loved sports. A teacher remembered that he often wrote about his family, and called him "the strong, silent type."
