Second Lieutenant Matthew S. Coutu, 23, N. Kingstown, R.I.
Coutu, a military policeman, died June 27, 2005, in Baghdad when his convoy was hit by small-arms fire. His battalion commander described him as "perhaps the best platoon leader in the unit." The son and grandson of veterans, he chose the University of Maine for its ROTC program and gave up his favorite Taco Bell food to stay healthy for service. In his last e-mail home, he was distraught because two members of his unit had been wounded.
