Sergeant First Class Chris S. Chapin, 39, Proctor, Vt.
Chapin was a Vermont Army National Guardsman who volunteered for duty in Iraq. He was on a public-affairs mission, helping Iraqis learn about voting near Ramadi, when he was killed by a sniper's bullet in the heart. He and his wife, Paula, were married earlier in the summer, in the brief interval between the end of the unit's training and their deployment. He was a former active-duty soldier who also helped train Iraqi soldiers.
