Recommendation #5
That planning by Massport and the city for the adjacent 700-acre industrial port area be coordinated with the feel and fabric of the Fort Point Channel neighborhood, while maximizing port-related uses to the extent feasible.
From the panel's report:
The national panel recognizes that there are few regulatory impediments to Massport developing its land as it pleases. We urge, however that the Authority coordinate its land use priorities and urban design policies with planning for the 170-acre Fort Point Channel area. On the basis of the forum testimony, the panel is somewhat dubious about the possibility of reviving Boston Harbor as a major port for containerized cargo. However, the panel feels Massport should pursue its efforts to attract niche cargo uses to the extent that they prove both feasible and profitable.
With respect to fishing and seafood processing, the national panel applauds Massport's efforts to support these industries, in particular the small-boat fishermen segment.
