St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 41, Milford 39

Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Milford

The No. 8 Pioneers (6-4) defeated the Scarlet Hawks (2-8), 41-39, in an overtime thriller behind quarterback Andrew Smiley’s record night. Smiley, a junior, needed 240 yards to break the all-time Central Mass. season passing record of 2,556 yards, set by former Algonquin star Marc Eddy in 1999. Smiley threw for 272 yards in the first half and finished with 386 yards and four touchdowns, three in the air. Smiley now stands at 2,702 yards with one game left in the regular season, against St. Peter-Marian on Thanksgiving. “As long as our team is winning games, that’s all I care about,” Smiley said. “If I get the ball to our receivers, they’re going to get yards after the catch. It’s a lot of fun.” Smiley’s 4-yard rushing TD tied the score at 39 and Shadrach Abrokwah’s conversion rush gave St. John’s the win. Smiley broke Eddy’s record on a 33-yard pass to John Giacoppe in the second quarter to set up Smiley’s third touchdown of the half.
