Doherty’s defense has had its issues this season, but at the Highlanders’ time of need, it stepped up. Doherty’s defense had two big fourth-quarter stops, including four straight stops inside the 1-yard line, and another in overtime as the Highlanders defeated St. Peter-Marian, 28-20, in an instant classic at Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium last night. Noah Robinson, who was one of a number of Doherty’s defensive standouts, was the hero on offense, catching a fourth-down, 8-yard TD pass from Luke Brennan in overtime. Brennan threw for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Issac Yiadom (20-yard reception), Abdulla Webster (3-yard run) and Sam Oppong (30-yard run) had Doherty’s regulation touchdowns. “This is a great win for us, and a big game for our defense,” Yiadom said. “A lot of guys stepped up and did their job. Our offense has been great all season, but we knew we needed to play better on defense. We have been working hard at it and it paid off (last night).” Yiadom was a star on both sides of the ball, coming up with a number of key defensive plays (including an interception and knocking down the final pass in OT) and making two catches for 54 yards on offense.
