Ninth-ranked Shepherd Hill Regional came into tonight’s game against Bartlett High determined to bury last week’s disappointing loss at top-ranked Auburn. After a shaky start, the Rams did just that by rolling over the archrival Indians, 40-14. Junior running back Jake Gelb scored on a 47-yard run to break the game open early in the third quarter for Shepherd Hill (5-1), which shrugged off three first-half turnovers. “We’re still recovering from last week, and I think we were down a little bit to start the game,” Rams coach Chris Lindstrom said. “It took us a little bit to get back on the horse.” Gelb’s touchdown came just 53 seconds into the third quarter, a run down the right sideline that gave the Rams a 32-14 lead. “I just went out and followed my blocks,” Gelb said. “The hole opened up perfectly and I just shot through.” A key moment for Shepherd Hill came late in the second quarter while nursing a 24-14 lead and the Indians (2-4) threatening inside the 5-yard line after recovering a fumble. Shepherd Hill forced quarterback Patrick Spooner to throw back-to-back incompletions on third and fourth down to keep its double-digit lead intact at halftime.
