The fifth-seeded Spartans, who have lost only one game in two seasons, and finished as runners-up in the state final last year, edged top-seeded Hopedale at Hurd Field. The 16-0-3 Spartans meet Littleton in the final on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Grafton High. Hopedale ended its season at 18-2. In an evenly-matched, defensive battle, played in breath-visible cold air, the Spartans' Kristin Aveni tipped the scales on her home turf with an 8-foot backhander with 9:44 left in the second half. Senior back Amy Grenier began the scoring play, blasting a shot on net from outside the circle. The ball tipped off junior Rachel Testa's stick and then to Aveni who netted the game-winner past Hopedale goalie Claire Hampsch, who was outstanding throughout the game.
