This postseason will go a long way toward determining Sutton star senior Justin Rothermich's legacy, and so far the top scorer for the reigning Division 3 state champions has owned the spotlight. Rothermich came through in the clutch again Wednesday night, netting the only goal of a tightly-contested game in the 67th minute to deliver the Sammies past Hopkins Academy, 1-0, in a state semifinal at Westfield State's Alumni Field. The final will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium. Sutton (19-1-1) will face Eastern Mass. champion Watertown. ‘‘It would mean everything to me to repeat,'' said Rothermich, who had a goal and two assists in Sutton's 3-0 win over Keefe Tech in the Central Mass. final. ‘‘When we won district finals, we were happy but it's almost like I haven't seen the guys go crazy because they wanted to get there to the end again and now they've accomplished that,'' said coach Mike Elster, whose two sons — Ryan, a junior, and Jordan, a sophomore — contributed to the win. Rothermich's goal came off a long free kick taken by center back Joe Lacasse as the captain swooped in to get the faintest touch on the ball and redirect it past goalie Ben Pitta at the left post. Pitta thwarted him several times earlier.
