What would have been a career night for any other player was just any old game for South High playmaking captain Rod Milton. Fresh off beating No. 1 Wachusett Regional on the road, the sixth-ranked Colonels avoided a letdown at home on Thursday. Milton scored a season-high 35 points, 15 in the fourth quarter, in a 78-69 victory over No. 8 Fitchburg. ‘‘It was a gritty win,'' South coach Pat Williams said. ‘‘Tough game against Wachusett the other night; we had tired legs. It was just a grind-out win. It wasn't pretty, but you'll take the win when you're playing back-to-back top-10 teams.''
