The St. Peter-Marian Guardians lived up to their nickname by defending the basket about as well as can be expected. SPM limited North High to seven field goals, including just five until the final minute, in a 56-25 victory Sunday in the opening round of the T&G Hometeam Worcester City Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the Polar Bears’ gym. The Guardians took an 18-2 lead late in the first quarter and didn’t allow North to score a basket until James Bowhile drove for a layup with 5:48 left in the half. Bowhile’s basket pulled North within 20-9, but that was as close as the Polar Bears got. St. Peter-Marian (15-5) will play South (14-4) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in a semifinal. Rod Milton scored 24 points to carry the Colonels to a 61-58 victory at SPM on Dec. 14. North (2-17) will play Worcester Tech (15-4) at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in a consolation game. Both games will be at North High. Junior Michael Boaheng led the Guardians with nine points. Seniors Jalen Evans-Ashton, Terence Watson and Anthony Manzello each scored seven. Sophomore A.J. Pettway led North with 10 points.
