Doherty did the job defensively in Saturday's Inter-High Holiday Tournament final against Burncoat High, holding the Patriots to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters. At the other end, tournament MVP Jayna Cormier scored 23 points in powering her team to a 56-41 victory at Burncoat. Cormier's offense was part of a total team effort. Senior guard Tia Conteh had 8 points, 8 steals and 4 assists, with two 3-pointers. Senior guard Emily Capstick contributed six points and six steals. Senior guard Annalie Walsh-Costello had 11 deflections as the Highlanders' defense produced 32 steals. The Highlanders broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Patriots, 21-8, to grab a 45-24 advantage. Doherty opened the quarter with a 7-0 burst over the first 2:40. Cormier hit a put-back and free throw while Lina Graham scored from in close, followed by a layup off a steal by Conteh, giving the victors a 31-16 lead. The Highlanders finished the quarter with a 9-0 run, getting buckets from four players, two hoops coming on layups after Burncoat turnovers. South's Katherine Edmonds and North's Shayla Conners joined Sims, Capstick and Cormier on the all-tournament team.
