The Reading Rockets gave Woburn a run for its money last night in girls’ hockey, but the visiting Tanners outlasted their Middlesex rival en route to the league title. Woburn won, 4-3, at the Burbank Ice Arena, after weathering an offensive storm from the Rockets in the third period. The Tanners entered the last period with a 2-0 lead after two first-period goals from senior co-captain Kayla Smith.“The first goal was huge, just a great play and a great shot. The second goal was just a great overall group effort,” said Woburn coach Bob MacCurtain.Three minutes into the third period the Rockets started to show they were not going to hand the Middlesex title over easily when Ali O’Leary scored Reading’s first goal.Woburn answered on its next offensive possession. Senior Stephanie Gangi took the puck from the Tanners’ blue line, past center ice and through both Rocket defenders and into the Reading net.Reading’s Stephanie Cohen fired back, maneuvering the puck around Woburn goalie Courtney Davis before the two collided and the puck traveled into the empty net to make the score, 3-2, with just under seven minutes left.Reading went on offense, pulled its goalie and Caroline Seibold buried the puck into the Woburn net for the tying goal with 1:19 to play.“We’ve stressed discipline this season, we didn’t sit back. Reading is an excellent team and they don’t quit,” MacCurtain said. The Tanners’ Ashley Moran scored the winning goal with 45 seconds left and sent her team home as league champions.
