Caitlin Abela scored her 1000th career point for No. 5 Oliver Ames but the performance was not enough as fourth-ranked Medfield (19-1) rallied to beat the Tigers 61-55 in the championship game of the Rebel Hoop Classic in Walpole. It was the first loss of the season for Oliver Ames (19-1). Lauren Petit was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 16 points. She also had six steals and three assists and was named tournament MVP. Last season Oliver Ames beat Medfield in the championship game of the Rebel Hoop Classic and the script looked to be more of the same when the Tigers jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game on Wednesday. In the second quarter Medfield trailed by as much as 13 but the Warriors chipped away to cut the deficit to six at the half. “We made some pretty good adjustments and tightened up the defense in the second half,” said Medfield head coach Mark Nickerson. In the third quarter Medfield took the lead for the first time and went into the fourth up 44-42. The comeback was led on offense by Jen Narlee who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The fourth quarter went back and forth until the Warriors came up with a few key defensive stops to help pull away late. Abela netted her 1000th point in the second quarter but Medfield held her to only four points in the first half. She would finish the game with 16 points. “Our focus was to contain Caitlin. I think we did a pretty good job of limiting her,” said Nickerson. With Abela the primary focus of Medfield, Michaela Lieui took advantage scoring a game high 22 points for the Tigers including 14 in the first half. This was the final regular season game for both teams and the victory gives Medfield huge momentum heading into the state tournament. “That was a big win for us,” said Nickerson.
