Jack Reidy scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Matt Gentile stopped 21 shots as the Scituate hockey team defeated fourth-seeded Middleboro, 2-1, on Thursday at the Bridgewater Ice Arena in the first round of the Division 3 South tournament. The 20th seeded Sailors (11-8-3) scored the game’s first goal midway through the second period. Junior center Josh Beck drove around the net and slapped three shots. On the third deflection, junior center Jamie Murray stuffed the puck into the right side of the net. “The first period and early in the second went well for us,’’ said Scituate coach Mike Breen. “We were playing all three of our lines and they were only playing two and they were wearing out.’’ “They have a great line of scorers, so by playing three lines changes their pace of play and takes the edge out from their game.” The Sachems (15-5-1) were able to tie the game in the second period when a wide slap shot ricocheted off a Scituate defender and into the top right of the net. The Sailors got the winner when junior defensemen Jack Ready unleashed a wrist shot from the point that hit a Sachems stick it deflected into the net. “Their goalie had the angle covered, but it went to a different position,’’ said Breen. “It could have been anyone’s game. They came out hard in the third quarter. They pressured us and they went for it. They were beating us to the puck and I was in shock for the first three shifts and once we popped our second goal it took the wind out of their sails.” The Sailors advance to face 12th-seeded Norwell in the quarterfinals.
