Senior David Mercier hit a jumper and then sank two of three crucial free throws in the final minute, while Michael Tittlebaum hit a free throw with 8.5 seconds left to lead the second-seeded Scarlet Hawks to the Division 1 title at WPI. Tittlebaum's foul shot made it 56-54 with 8.5 seconds left and the Pioneers had a final chance to tie the game, but a layup from Adham Floyd hit the rim and a put-back attempt from Alex Fisher missed to give Milford its first title since 1998 and second in school history. The Scarlet Hawks also snapped St. John's streak of five straight titles. Milford (20-3) faces Putnam (22-1) at 7:45 Tuesday at the DCU Center in a state semifinal. Fisher led the Pioneers (16-7) with 17 points, while Kenny Harrington added 14. Harrington brought St. John's back into the game with a jumper and a 3-pointer in the corner with two defenders in his face that made the score 51-50 with 1:20 left. Mercier led Milford with 15 points, while Mike Tracy added 12 and Scott VanBuskirk had 11.
