Rebounding from a 2-9 start to qualify for the postseason, Algonquin Regional stayed true to form during Thursday’s come-from-behind 5-4 Division 1 first round victory over Marlboro. The No. 8 Tomahawks (12-9) have won 10 straight and will travel to face No. 1 Nashoba (17-3) in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Monday. The Chieftains were the last team to defeat Algonquin, handing the Tomahawks a 6-5 loss on May 4. Algonquin kept its season alive in dramatic fashion, as the Tomahawks saw a 3-2 lead disappear in the seventh as the ninth-seeded Panthers (11-10) took the lead on a two-run, bases-loaded single by LeMoyne College-bound catcher Matt Buroni (4 for 5, 3 RBIs) to make it 4-3. “I am extremely proud of this group of guys,” Marlboro coach Paul Duplessis said. “Moving up to Division 1 this year I thought we had a very good year and to play a team of Algonquin’s caliber and take them to the ninth inning, yes they beat us, but I don’t think we lost this game. Our kids played their hearts out right to the very end. We made a few mistakes but we also made some very good plays. Other than getting beat I have no regrets.”
