Something old is turned into something new. Not that advancing to the Central Mass. Division 1 girls’ lacrosse final is getting old for Algonquin — not by any stretch — it’s just that the top-seeded Tomahawks are a different team than last year’s district champion. Instead of one or two superstars, Algonquin has been led by deep roster of talented players. That much was clear Wednesday night, as seven Tomahawks scored in their 16-8 semifinal win over No. 4 Groton-Dunstable (16-5) at Foley Stadium. Algonquin (17-3) returns to Foley Stadium at 2:30 p.m. Saturday to defend their district title against third-ranked Shrewsbury in a rematch of a May 16 nailbiter won by Algonquin, 13-12. “We’re a lot different than last year where there’s not one stellar player,” said Algonquin coach John Healy. “We’ve had several players step up and fill the holes.”
