Northbridge High senior Ben O’Donnell was looking forward to Wednesday for more than a month, but it turned out to be memorable for a much better reason. Wednesday was the day that O’Donnell was scheduled to see a doctor to find out if he could stop wearing a protective boot and begin playing baseball again after he fouled a pitch off his right ankle and broke it during a game against Nipmuc on April 21. O’Donnell was itching to play, so he persuaded his mother to move up his appointment to May 29, got the OK to get rid of the boot and went 0 for 2 in his return to the lineup on Monday in a 2-1 Central Mass. Division 2 quarterfinal win over Nipmuc. In a semifinal Wednesday, wearing a brace on his foot, O’Donnell ripped a run-scoring double and an RBI single to help Northbridge knock off Assabet Valley, 5-2, at Riverside Park. Top-seeded Northbridge (20-2) advanced to the Central Mass. final for the fourth year in a row and will play Auburn at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Tivnan Field.
