Central Mass. Tennis Tournament director Bill Gibbons predicted Wednesday’s Division 1 girls’ championship between Shrewsbury and Westboro at St. John’s High would go down to the wire and likely would be decided by doubles play. With five decades of involvement with area high school tennis, that wasn’t a hunch — it was practically science. With the match tied, 2-2, Shrewsbury’s No. 2 doubles team of Anjali Puthanangady and Sonali Razdan outlasted the Rangers’ Anna Skidmore and Samantha Mack, 6-2, 7-6, to give the second-seeded Colonials a 3-2 victory and the program’s first Central Mass. title. Shrewsbury (17-2) will meet Western Mass. champion Longmeadow on Monday at a site and time to be determined. Westboro, the tournament’s top seed and defending Central Mass. champion, finished 16-3. Jess Perkins (S) d. Pooja Ganesh, 6-2, 6-0; Samantha Kehoe (W) d. Catherine Zhang, 6-0, 7-5; Ashley Chiu (W) d. Celine Mende, 6-2, 6-3; Radhika Duvvuri-Julie Shamgochian (S) d. Stephanie Johnston-Arielle Sigel, 6-4, 6-3; Anjali Puthanangady-Sonali Razdan (S) d. Anna Skidmore-Samantha Mack, 6-2, 7-6. Records: S 17-2, W 16-3.
