SOFTBALL

Agawam 2, Marlborough 1

Friday, Jun. 14, 2013, at Agawam

Rielly Wieners had an RBI single and the winning run scored on an error in the third, as the Brownies (18-7) hung on to top the Panthers (17-7) in a Division 1 state semifinal at Turners Falls High's Bourdeau Fields Complex in Montague. Agawam advances to Saturday's 7 p.m. state final with Milford at Worcester State. Missed opportunities plagued Marlboro all night, as the Panthers stranded eight runners on base. “We didn’t get the clutch hits and had some bad breaks go our way,” Panthers coach Kyle Westcott said. “We got runners on but didn’t score when we needed to. This was still an unbelievable season for us. No Marlboro team had ever won a district championship. This was the furthest any Marlboro softball team had ever gone so I’m pretty proud of that.”
