West Boylston 20, Lunenburg 13

Friday, Sep. 27, 2013, at Lunenburg

West Boylston coach Dave Tinglof knew his defense would be facing a tough test against Lunenburg last night, and he challenged them to play their best game of the season. His defense responded, twice stopping Lunenburg inside the red zone in the final four minutes to lead the Lions to a hard-fought, 20-13 win over the Blue Knights last night. “Lunenburg is an excellent football team with an explosive offense,” Tinglof said. “Any team that can score 70 points in its first two games is going to be a challenge, but our defense stepped up and got some big stops when we needed them.” The Lions (2-1) held a slim 14-13 before Bryan Hayes made a diving catch of an Alex Thomas pass to give West Boylston a 20-13 advantage with 5:50 to play. The Knights, who had already received a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Nathan Nash, got another big return – this time a 57-yard return by sophomore Dustin Powell (plus a late hit penalty) to give Lunenburg the ball at the West Boylston 10. However, the Knights were unable to do anything, as the Lions’ Ben Tasker, Alex Churchill, Matt Reynolds, and Tom McCarthy were able to force a turnover on downs. Minutes later, Lunenburg came up with another big play on special teams, as the Knights sacked punter Kyle McCubrey after a bad snap to give them the ball on the Lions’ 17 with 1:14 to play. Nash, who took over for his brother Jeremy Nash at QB in the second half, was unable to find an open receiver before getting stopped at the 8 on a quarterback draw on fourth down. “We had our chances, and our guys battled hard all game,” Lunenburg coach Steve Boone. “We came up a little short against an excellent team, and I’m pleased with the effort, but I think we are all a little disappointed we didn’t leave here with a win.”
