Abington 20, Bishop Feehan 12

Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Abington

In 37 years at the helm of Abington's football program, coach Jim Kelliher has seen plenty of success — and some failure — while leading the Green Wave. Put last night's effort in the successful column. Kelliher nabbed his 200th win with Abington's 20-12 victory over visiting Bishop Feehan, joining a select group. At 200-161-10, he's in a club of 40 (10 of whom are still coaching) that have surpassed the milestone. Last week, Cardinal Spellman's Ron St. George took the leap as well. Kelliher made sure to spread around the credit. ‘‘It's exciting and I'm really thrilled,'' Kelliher said. ‘‘But at the same time, my coaching staff has been great. We've now been together for a long time. We know each other pretty well. The kids respect them a lot and they react to them, which is pretty important, too. But they've certainly helped my cause in the last eight or nine years because it's been certainly better than beforehand.'' Kelliher was speaking of those down years. While Abington has won Super Bowls, most recently in 2005, the coach has also had some down years. ‘‘There were times where I had the 0-for-10's,'' Kelliher said. ‘‘I've also come around and had the 10-and-0's. But at the same time, the most important thing was the kids themselves. How much they've played each and every game to try to do their best. That's what we asked of them and that's what they gave us.'' Last night, the Green Wave gave a sound performance in beating Bishop Feehan. Dylan Pietrasik scored two touchdowns, including a 14-yard run with 1:49 left in the game to seal the win. John Lane added a 44-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for Abington (3-0).
