Senior co-captains Bart Chenevert and Jamie Ortiz rushed 36 times for a combined 251 yards and four touchdowns as the host Pioneers (1-1) used their dominant ground game to overwhelm the Beavers (1-1) at McMahon Field. Ortiz had 142 yards on 15 rushes, including a 75-yard TD run and a 65-yard punt return that made it 14-0 after one quarter. Chenevert tacked on 109 rushing yards on 21 carries with TDs of 20 and 8 yards. The Pioneers led, 22-6, at halftime. Freshman Ariel De La Cruz scored Southbridge's final TD on an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter and added the 2-point conversion rush himself, making it a 38-6 game. Pioneers QB Al Gilliard was at his economical best in the air -- 3 of 5 for 63 yards without an interception. Valley Tech got a 35-yard touchdown run from Julian Picard late in the second period, and scored again in garbage time.
