Homer was an avid fisherman and hunter, but he had both a strong regard for the rules of sport and a deep appreciation for the beauty and grace of his prey. In this watercolor, the artist presents a tender, close-up view of a doe who has been killed while awkwardly straddling a log to drink. On the reverse of the watercolor, Homer scribbled, "Just shot. A miserable Pot hunter," an angry allusion to the unsportsmanlike practice of shooting young does, whose loss depleted the deer population.
