WHDH-TV, Channel 7 is committed to covering parenting issues with Katy Abel's "Parent-to-Parent" reports which air on Tuesdays and Thursdays during 7 NEWS at 5PM. Abel began covering topics for parents in March 1995. Prior to that, she had focused on education and handled general assignment duties since September 1992.
Abel joined WHDH-TV in March 1989 as a writer, producer and news anchor on "Ready To Go!" a Channel 7 award-winning Saturday morning program for young people.
As part of her work on "Ready To Go!" Abel created "The Kids' Campaign for Human Rights." Young viewers adopted one of Amnesty International's prisoners of conscience, a Yugoslavian teenager imprisoned after taking part in a peaceful campaign was cited by Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and the girl's family as the probable factor leading to her early release from prison.
She also was a reporter and produced for "Our Times," an hour-long newsmagazine on Channel 7. Her work ranged form in-depth reports on local politics and crime to celebrity profiles.
In addition to her work at Channel 7, Abel has produced reports for The Learning Channel's "Teacher TV" series. Her half-hour special on sexual harassment in schools aired on TLC in September, 1993. She also hosts a live, interactive program for teens, "Student forum," beamed via satellite to high schools throughout New England.
Prior to joining the station, from 1984 to 1989, Abel was news director at WBCN-FM Radio, where she supervised the news staff, assigned daily news stories, and produced special events coverage. From 1981 to 1984, she was news anchor/reporter at WBCN, responsible for writing and anchoring the morning newscast and reporting on local and international stories.
She began her career in broadcasting as a news anchor/reporter at WBUR-FM from 1979 to 1981. While there, she anchored the station's half-hour newscast, "Evening Edition," and provided Boston City Hall and State House coverage. In addition, Abel co-hosted WCVB-TV's live 1985 special, "Rock Against Racism." She also was a feature reporter for the Neighborhood Network News from 1984 to 1987.
Abel has traveled extensively, reporting from Nicaragua, Argentina and the Soviet Union. She is the recipient of several awards including a 1987 first place Associated Press award in the Public Affairs Series category. Abel attended Boston University.
