Garry Armstrong, who joined WHDH-TV, 7 NEWS, as a general assignment reporter in June 1971, has almost 25 years experience covering news in Boston.
In addition to his reporting on such major issues as race relations, nuclear power and issues pertaining to the New England area, he also reports for WHDH-TV weekly public affairs program URBAN UPDATE.
In February 1985, Armstrong co-hosted "Portrait of Success: The Legacy of Freedom House," which paid tribute to the 35th anniversary of Freedom House in Roxbury. He also has covered, in depth, stories such as the 1983 and 1985 Claus Von Bulow trials, and was the principal correspondent for the 2Oth anniversary "March on Washington" in September 1983. In addition, he was producer/reporter for a special news series in November 1984, "Boston School Desegregation -- 10 Years After." Armstrong reported from Rome on Raymond Flynn's appointment as Vatican ambassador and has covered the Clinton family's vacations on Martha's Vineyard.
Prior to his joining 7 NEWS, Armstrong was a reporter at WHTC-TV, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a writer/reporter/ producer at ABC network radio in New York in 1967. In addition, he held similar positions at a number of small stations in New York, North Carolina and the Virgin Islands.
In 1978, Armstrong served as reporter on a three-part expose of Boston's emergency medical services. The series won first place honors in the Clarion awards, a national competition sponsored by Women in Communications, Inc.
Armstrong was also honored in 1976 by the Massachusetts Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation for his five-part series, "Arthritis: The Crippler." He is the recipient of two Emmy awards presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Boston/New England Chapter, for individual and group reporting. In addition, Armstrong was nominated for a 1986 New England Emmy for his coverage of the 1985 Claus Von Bulow trial.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Armstrong majored in dramatic literature at Hofstra University.
