Senator Scott Brown has picked up the endorsement of two Gloucester politicos.
Former state Representative Anthony Verga, a Democrat, announced his backing of the Republican senator during a joint appearance on Saturday at the Lobsta Land restaurant.
City Councilor Sefatia Romeo Theken, who is not enrolled in either major political party, also declared she was supporting Brown.
He is seeking his first full, six-year Senate term, but is being challenged by Democrat Elizabeth Warren.
“Scott and I worked closely on a range of important issues when we served together, and I can tell you that he approaches each challenge with an open mind and an eye toward problem solving,” said Verga, who served in the Legislature from 1995 to 2009.
Romeo Theken said: “I don’t believe in the party, I believe in the person. After Scott was elected, he got up to speed very quickly on the issues facing this community.”
Verga and Romeo Theken join a group of Democrats and independents who have endorsed Brown, including former Boston Mayor Raymond L. Flynn, former Worcester Mayor Konstantina Lukes, and several former state representatives and state senators.
“I am honored these leaders are willing to reach across the aisle to support my campaign,” Brown said in a statement. “We’re Americans first, and I will continue to work across the aisle to advance policies that create economic growth and put people back to work.”Glen Johnson can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
