Super PAC to air pro-Gomez ad in US Senate race

An outside group supporting Republican Gabriel E. Gomez’s campaign for US Senate goes on the air today with a 60-second radio ad knocking Democratic US Representative Edward J. Markey as one of “the same old politicians,” according to an adviser to the group.

The Committee for a Better Massachusetts has targeted the ad for conservative-leaning radio shows such as Rush Limbaugh’s and Howie Carr’s. According to a script provided to the Globe, the spot promotes Gomez, an investor who lives in Cohasset, as a former Navy SEAL, a first-generation Hispanic-American, and “a businessman—a fiscal conservative who knows how to balance budgets and create jobs.”

The committee is a super PAC that is being advised by Eric Fehrnstrom, a longtime senior aide to 2012 Republican nominee and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Fehrnstrom is one of several former Romney aides who has taken a role in the Massachusetts Senate race, though the group has splintered among three candidates.

The Republican primary for the Senate seat, vacated when John F. Kerry became secretary of state, is scheduled for April 30. Gomez is matched against former US attorney Michael J. Sullivan and state Representative Daniel B. Winslow.

While Gomez has trailed in public polling, he has said repeatedly that he does not intend to attack his fellow Republicans. Markey, the Democratic front-runner against fellow House Democrat Stephen F. Lynch, has served as a target for all three GOP campaigns.
