SEIU spends $340,000 canvassing for Markey
A big union is putting money behind Democratic Senate nominee Edward J. Markey in the first expenditure by an outside group in the race since the April 30 Republican and Democratic primary elections.
The Service Employees International Union Committee On Political Education spent $340,000 in support of Markey this week, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
The money was spent on canvassing services for the general election, according to the records.
“The healthcare workers, janitors, social workers, and other workers in SEIU are actively encouraging our communities to vote for Ed Markey because he’s been a champion on key issues like growing jobs and investing in education,” SEIU Massachusetts State Council President Cliff Cohn said in a statement to the Globe.
A spokesman for Gabriel E. Gomez, Markey’s GOP opponent, had no comment on the union spending.
The union’s political committee also spent a smilar amount in support of Markey during his primary race against US Representative Stephen F. Lynch, records show.
Markey and Gomez will face off in a June 25 special election.Joshua Miller can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @jm_bos.
