Legislature set to take up sales tax holiday for Aug. 10-11

A state sales tax holiday may be coming your way on the weekend of Aug. 10-11.

Next week, the state Legislature will likely pass legislation that will temporarily suspend Massachusetts’ 6.25 percent sales tax during the second weekend in August, as the state often does each summer.

The tax holiday would apply to retail items costing $2.500 or less. So if you’re mulling buying a new Mercedes-Benz that weekend, under the legislation, you would still fork over the sales tax to the state.

“While the Massachusetts economy is continuing to improve, folks across the Commonwealth are still facing tough fiscal times,” House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo said in a statement. “The sales tax holiday will provide relief to consumers and encourage residents to shop locally.”
