Patrick to host political fundraiser, a day after returning from Asia trip
Governor Deval Patrick is scheduled to return Wednesday from an 11-day Asian trade trip, when he’ll be met by state health insurance website woes. A day later, he’ll meet with political contributors willing to pay up to $5,000 to spend the Thursday before Christmas with him.
Patrick’s holiday party, and the private reception to follow, will bankroll his state political committee and his federal political action committee, the latter of which is permitted to accept the larger donations.
Serving on the host committee are several Beacon Hill power players and Patrick administration alumni, including former US Senator William “Mo” Cowan, who was Patrick’s chief of staff before the governor appointed him to an interim Senate term.
Another former Patrick chief of staff, Arthur Bernard, joins Cowan on the host committee, along with his two lobbying firm colleagues Christian Scorzoni, who held a top energy and environment post under Patrick, and Robert E. Travaglini, the former state Senate president. Nonnie S. Burnes, who was state insurance commissioner during Patrick’s first term, is also co-hosting.
Longtime Patrick observers will also recognize on the committee list the name of Amy Gorin, who worked as Diane Patrick’s chief of staff in the early days of the first term, an appointment that drew controversy. Gorin later resigned.
The year-end fundraiser comes as Patrick’s political expenses appear set to wind down. He is not running for re-election and has repeatedly stated that he will not run for president in 2016.
His federal fundraising outfit, Together PAC, can accept donations above the state’s $500 cap, and can finance his political travel. It listed $303,683 on hand at the end of September.
Tickets to the holiday party cost $100 or $500, according to an invitation obtained by the Globe. Private reception rates range from $1,000 to $5,000.
The invitation also encourages attendees to bring gifts to be donated to the Home for Little Wanderers.Jim O’Sullivan can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @josreports.
