The owners had first listed this charming barn-red 18th-century Colonial three years ago, soon after renovating the kitchen. But then a storm knocked over a huge tree with such force that branches pushed their way through the roof and into the kitchen. After rebuilding, the owners decided to stay a bit longer in their "new" home.

Now they are ready to sell again, and this time the house features a new roof, new master bedroom, and updated family room. Situated at the driveway entrance, the family room was actually once an attached carriage house and had slab floors. Now, like most of the home, it sports wide knotty-pine boards.

The twice renovated kitchen now has higher ceilings and a breakfast bar replacing a fireplace flue. The previous renovation added cherry cabinets, granite counters, and a built-in desk. Recessed and track lighting add to its modern feel, although lots of windows brighten the room - as well as the entire home. The other half of this large open space is used as a dining room, with two built-in china cabinets that are old lockers from MIT. The first floor also features two front sitting areas that reflect its older styling, with chair and picture rails, one with grass-cloth wallpaper and another painted red and white.

Upstairs, the new master bedroom area has a room with washer/dryer that also doubles as a playroom; a wide hall with built-ins and modern bathroom; and the bedroom, painted Wedgwood blue, with windows on three sides. One note: four fireplaces with handsome mantles haven't been used for a while, but apparently are repairable. Broker Kathy Keogh of Coldwell Banker will hold an open house today from noon to 2 p.m.
