Here's the answer to the question 54,000 commuters on Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester have been asking: Yes, the view is marvelous. For the last year, a new home was going up on the slope that faces Dorchester Bay and UMass Boston. The house appears to be in the shape of an upside down L. Inside is a soaring space that directs the view out toward the water. Timbers from the property's earlier life as a boathouse are a rich dark brown and dominate the vaulted ceilings above the dining room and kitchen. The latter has granite counters, a granite-topped island and three wonderful skylights.

The first floor includes the master suite, with a large whirlpool bath, separate shower, and walk-in closet. But it's the marvelous views of the bay, brought inside by four large rectangular windows, that gives this home such distinction.

Adjacent is a living room with gas fireplace and large glass doors to a spacious deck. Downstairs is the second bedroom with the same wall of windows. The rest of the floor is now open, and leads out to a covered deck.

Outside, however, isn't much to brag about, as the bulk of the 6,500-square-foot lot is an apron of raggedy grass on Morrissey. Also, the house has a septic system instead of public sewer. Listing broker, Paul Dardano of Gibson Sotheby's in Dorchester, is holding an open house today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
