Cottage is secluded garden hideaway
In the late 1800s, Dr. William R. Hayden owned a hotel and health resort beside Spring Pond, as well as a pharmaceutical laboratory started by another of the resort’s owners. The hotel was demolished in 1913, the Hayden homestead is now surrounded by modern homes, and the laboratory became condos in the 1980s. Spring Pond was renamed Fawn Lake and remains a peaceful spot.
And then there was this lesser-known cottage reputed to belong to the Hayden caretaker. It is tucked away on an acre-and-a-half, the grounds thick with enchanting gardens and paths and surrounded by woods. The long private driveway leads to the rear of the home, where 5-foot-high Canna lilies set into one of many raised stone perennial beds welcome visitors. Around a bend, roses climb the heavy front door. Copper downspouts adorn the beige stucco building.
Inside, the staircase, floors, and doors are oak stained to a rich hue. A fieldstone fireplace is the focus in the front-to-back living room, which has small windows that look out on the gardens and steps to a screened porch. A butler’s pantry with built-in drawers and glass cabinets leads to the small kitchen with terra cotta tiles and oak cabinets. A cozy dining room and half bath complete this level. Upstairs, the master bedroom runs front to back. The home is simple, comfortable, and in excellent condition. There’s no garage, but plenty of room to build.
“It’s ideal for someone who wants to get away from it all,’’ said listing broker Margo Olson of William Raveis Real Estate, who will hold an open house from 1-3 p.m. today.![]()
