Create a budget

Once you have the mortgage pre-approval, sit down, do a careful, exhaustive budget, and figure out how much you can afford to spend on a home. Why? Just because the lender says they’ll lend you X number of dollars, it doesn’t mean you can afford to make the payment on that amount each month.
