The home's entryway has a spiral staircase that leads upstairs. During the renovation, the couple stripped away lead paint using a lye-in-sawdust medium that spreads on like peanut butter, hardens in a day, and allows layers of paint to be peeled away without toxic pollution. They chose bamboo for the floors, because 'bamboo is totally renewable and less expensive' than hardwood, says Terrien.
